Getting the right amount of sleep helps your body rest and recover from the stresses of the day. It’s easy to see how different you feel when you get enough sleep one night vs a night where you toss and turn for hours. The amount of sleep that you need differs from person to person, but most find that they need a minimum of six to eight hours of good sleep every night. Check out some of the health symptoms that affect your sleep as well as how you can fix them to feel better than ever before.

Sleep Apnea

Another condition that brings symptoms that affect your sleep is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea changes the way you breathe at night and reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain. The condition causes you to stop breathing for a few seconds, which may make you wake in the middle of the night multiple times and not remember it in the morning. A few of the common sleep apnea symptoms include loss of energy and feeling tired during the day as well as dry mouth and/or sore throat. Some patients also experience memory loss and frequent headaches or high blood pressure and depression.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a medical condition that makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Even when you fall asleep, you have trouble staying that way. Your doctor will want to know how long you suffered from this condition. They usually require that you show symptoms for a minimum of three to six months before they can prescribe medication to treat insomnia. There are home remedies that some patients find helpful. You can try working out before bed and cutting back on caffeine intake or learning how to avoid stress while you take natural supplements.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Though this condition has a funny name, Restless Leg Syndrome can affect your life. Known as both RLS and Willis-Ekborn disease, it causes you to move your legs as you try to sleep. Do you wake up feeling just as tired as you did the night before? You may have RLS. RLS often affects patients as they sleep and makes their legs move constantly through the night. Some patients even wake with bruises they cannot explain from bumping their legs against the wall or nearby pieces of furniture.

Depression

While depression is occasionally a symptom of another condition, it is also a mental health disorder that can occur on its own. When you are depressed, you have a hard time engaging in the same activities that you did before. It often causes changes to your appetite, which leads to weight loss or weight gain. You may suffer from suicidal thoughts or negative thoughts that make you avoid the outside world. The symptoms of depression also include changes to the way you sleep. While you might find yourself dealing with insomnia and feeling unable to sleep, many patients sleep longer than they did before. Treating depression usually requires therapy and help from a licensed doctor.

Narcolepsy

The Cleveland Clinic found that around 70 million people in the United States suffer from a sleep disorder. Though narcolepsy is not as common as some of the other disorders, it can still cause many problems in your life. This condition causes you to feel so tired during the day that you fall asleep. You might nod off in the middle of the day at work or when you’re at a restaurant with your family. People with narcolepsy can also suffer from sleep paralysis, which prevents them from moving or speaking and can go along with nightmares. Your doctor can help you choose the right treatment for this condition and get you on a medication program that works for you.

Getting Help

No matter how much sleep you think you need every night, you may not feel as good as you expect when you wake up in the morning. The symptoms of major sleep disorders can make you more susceptible to stress and cause you to act out in negative ways. Seeing a doctor is the best way to get the help that you need. Talk with a doctor about the symptoms you have to find out what you can do to treat your sleep disorder or condition.
