There are a total of 209 active white players in the NBA, which is 61% of all players on teams. Out of the 209 white players, 191 are American (98%) while 5 are Canadians. This number has decreased since 2016 when there were 211 white players in the NBA. However, it is still greater than any other ethnicity in the league.

Despite having a major role in the NBA, white players have historically been underrepresented in team sports. The NBA was founded in 1946 and until 1963, there were only two black players. One on the Boston Celtics and one on the Philadelphia Warriors. This lack of diversity can be traced back to America’s segregated past as sports often seen.   • They bring a new perspective to the game. The best white basketball players may not have experience playing against different types of opponents, but that doesn’t mean they can’t compete on an equal level.
  • They offer a new perspective for marketing purposes. In order to reach a wider audience, sponsorships need to be targeted at a variety of demographics, which includes non-black and non-Latino athletes. Having more white athletes available to be seen and watched by a variety of demographics will help to raise the profile of basketball.
  • They can challenge stereotypes. White players are often portrayed as being privileged, unaware and complacent when it comes to issues facing African American communities. By having white athletes represent their communities in the media, it can help to dismantle negative stereotypes about African Americans.
  • They bring attention to what’s going on in the community. Through use of social media, white athletes can promote events and causes that are important to them and their communities. They may not be able to say they have had a hand in changing legislation or creating job opportunities, but they at least have a voice that is heard.
