What Screws Are Needed For Easy Diy Murphy Bed

A Murphy bed, also known as a wall bed, pull-down bed, or fold-away bed, is easy to assemble and install in your home with the right screws and anchors on hand. That way, you can make the most of your small space by maximizing vertical space rather than making the most of your horizontal space by making your room bigger by moving out of town. It’s no wonder that murphy beds are becoming so popular in today’s homes! Here’s what you need to know about the screws you need to create your own murphy bed system at home.

Woodworking Projects

There are various types of screws that you need in order to build a Murphy Bed. The first type is wood-to-wood and wood-to-metal self-tapping screws. They will attach the headboard and footboard to the side rails so that they can still be easily removed when not in use. You will also need two different sizes of bolts; they will connect the bed uprights with the side rails.

Once all of your pieces have been assembled, you will want some form of furniture bolt or handle, so that you can get access inside the bed frame when it is being folded up against the wall. The handle should be sturdy enough to withstand a high amount of force without breaking apart.

Standard Sheets

A Murphy Bed is a couch that folds into a bed which is perfect if you want an alternative to the typical furniture in your apartment or small space. In order to build one of these pieces of furniture, there are some necessary tools and materials

Hardware Supplies

Your first order of business is to decide how large you want your Murphy Bed to be. Standard size beds are 54 wide x 75 long, but you can make yours smaller if you live in a small space. The last thing you want is a wall-hugging Murphy Bed that takes up an entire room and leaves no room for other furniture!

Next, gather up some scraps of plywood or MDF in the same width as your mattress, plus 1 inch (so if your bed frame is 6 inches deep, cut it at 7 inches). These will become the outer wall pieces of your Murphy Bed.

Hardware Stores

Many home improvement stores have pre-made kits available that you can buy that include all the hardware and instructions to create a DIY Murphy Bed. You may also be able to find hardware kits on Amazon.

Below is a list of common hardware kits and what tools you will need:

Lumber Yard

If you want to learn how to build a Murphy Bed, the first thing you will need is wood. You will need 1x4s and 2x4s and plywood. Keep in mind that 2x4s are actually made from two 1x2s nailed together so you can get by with less of them. Now, depending on what size of Murphy Bed you want to build, you’ll need some more pieces of wood such as hinges and handles, shelf pins, door sweep hardware, knob or handle hardware, corner brackets and dowels.

Setting Up A Murphy Bed

There are many steps that go into setting up a Murphy Bed. The first thing to do is measure the space where you will be placing your Murphy Bed. Plan on having two feet of clearance in front and behind the bed frame. Next, make a list of what hardware you need including: washers, drywall anchors, drywall screws (usually 1/2), screwdriver, drill and drill bits, safety glasses and an anti-tip kit.

Double check that everything is on your list before leaving the store so you don’t forget anything important! Your next step is to assemble the frame; put it in place and attach all four brackets securely with drywall anchors and drywall screws.

Hole Saws

Murphy beds can be installed with a variety of different materials, including wood and metal. If you’re installing a metal Murphy bed, it will usually come with detailed instructions and all the necessary hardware. But if you have a wooden one, then you’ll need to buy additional things. For example, if your new DIY Murphy bed is taller than 72 inches (6 feet), then you’ll need some hole saws that can cut through the thick lumber.
