As a result of the relaxation of travel restrictions and reopening of borders in many countries and marketplaces throughout the globe, the usage of travel applications has begun to rebound as the option of reconnecting with relatives and even seeing new destinations becomes possible in specific markets.

The popularity of travel applications is increasing, even though they sustained massive losses during the lockdowns. For example, air traffic in the United States has reached two million passengers per day, near the pre-pandemic average of roughly 2.5 million. It represents a massive increase from the around 90,000 passengers in April 2020. In addition, hotels and automobile rentals have been in great demand. Compared to the same month last year, travel apps saw an 86 per cent increase in downloads in July.

Travel-related applications are making a return.

The recovery is much more impressive when we look at the APAC region. According to the latest figures, installs fell by 35% in2020 but have surged by 86% in2021, according to the latest statistics. Comparing North America to other areas, it saw the most severe loss in installations in 2020 (43 per cent), but it also recovered with a 21 per cent increase so far in 2021.

The worldwide fall in the use of travel apps began in April 2020, and it wasn’t until April 2021 that things truly started to turn around for them. In April 2020, worldwide downloads of travel apps were down 56 per cent year on year (YoY) compared to2019, while they were up 117 per cent year on year in April 2021.

Travellers are spending more time on their mobile devices.

Sessions have been speeding up the pace, similar to how installations have been. Again, we may use April as a point of comparison to emphasise the differences between the two months. Global sessions decreased by 44 per cent in April 2020 but increased by 137 per cent in April 2021.

Compared to other regions, APAC has had the most substantial growth in sessions, with a 75 per cent increase in sessions thus far in 2021. EMEA and North America are the following two fastest-growing regions, with growth rates of 21 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively.

Session durations are also growing across the board and are much longer than before the outbreak. Compared to 2019, the worldwide average session time increased to 16.02 minutes in 2020 and raised to 16.94 minutes in 2021. The duration of EMEA sessions has increased the greatest in the last 21 months, with sessions lasting 13 minutes in 2019, 19.46 minutes in 2020, and 21.24 minutes in 2021 thus far. In North America, session durations have been the most stable, averaging 7.6 minutes in2019, 7.1 minutes in2020, and 7.41 minutes in 2021.

Similarly, when we look at the total time spent in-app in the second quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2021, we observe that users are interacting for more extended periods now that additional possibilities in the realm of travel are available. Users spent significantly more time in-app overall in Q2 2021 than in Q2 2020 during 30 days, with the average time spent in-app after that period in Q2 2021 sitting at 5.15 minutes, compared to 4.7 minutes in Q2 2020.

What is the future of travel applications?

The capacity of applications in the travel sector to adapt to changes in consumer behaviour and the nature of travel itself will determine their long-term success in the industry. With an increasing number of customers willing and able to travel, mobile applications must guarantee that they assist in making the experience as accessible, secure, and easy as possible for consumers.

Travel limitations vary from area to region, country to country, and even state to state, and they are still subject to change on an overnight basis. The most successful travel applications will assist passengers in staying organised while on the road in the future. Build a taxi booking app using Builder.ai if you plan to develop one.
