Run out in areas where leashes are mandatory (public parks).

Especially for the education of young dogs, which no longer hang like a burdock on your leg, but discover their stubborn puberty period, a tow leash is a good tool for dog training. With tow-line training, you can counteract unwanted behavior at the same time. For adult dogs with a strong hunting instinct, for example, towline training is the only reliable method of working on the dog’s retrievability. First of all, you need a suitable dog harness and a stable, well-sized tow line (also called a field leash). The rule of thumb is: The larger and stronger the dog, the shorter and more stable the tow line should be. Once your hunting dog really takes off, you need to be able to cushion the jolt and hold the dog.

A field line is usually between five and 15 meters long. Longer lines quickly become unwieldy. Keep in mind, however, that a tow line lies a lot in the dirt and is pulled through mud. It, therefore, pays off if you buy yourself a professional leash specially designed for these training purposes. Because the leash should not be too heavy at the same time and unnecessarily hinder your dog. At the same time, it should not have loops or eyelets along its entire length, because scrub can easily get caught in it. The hooks on the dishes should be sufficiently dimensioned and have a secure closure system.

In addition, your dog needs a comfortable chest harness. This is very important because it will certainly not happen only once your dog moves into the leash during training. Here, the harness must properly dissipate the force without affecting the joints or the very sensitive neck of the dog. Therefore, the highest commandment is: Never attach the tow line to a collar, which can lead to serious injuries to your dog’s cervical vertebrae!

Attach a stopper knot to the end of the leash, which prevents the whole line from slipping through your hand. Especially with strong dogs that accelerate strongly, it is helpful to wear gloves to protect yourself from injury. It is also advisable to wear sturdy shoes because your dog can like to look for the distance through the field and forest. A firm step on the leash is also a tried and tested emergency stop.

The first exercise: Getting the dog used to the tow line

Your dog must first practice handling and walking with the tow leash before it really starts. You should definitely show him how he learns to maneuver an obstacle in order to get his leash-free again. In addition, he must accept that the leash is not a toy on which he is allowed to pull or nibble. If your dog struggles on a leash, clearly speak the command “Off!” and prevent him from playing with the leash. On the other hand, there is only a reward if he runs next to you. The leash serves as a link between you and your dog and should not come into tension. Motivate your dog to turn around for you and seek eye contact. For example, use the command “Look here!” and reward him if he looks up at you – even by chance. Or offer him a game when he turns to you.

Practice the recall with the tow line

The most necessary command that your dog must master in freewheeling is “Come!” As you train, watch your dog closely and try to anticipate what he will do next. Is there an exciting bush, are other dogs or people approaching it, or is something rustling somewhere in the undergrowth?

Call your dog back even before he can react to the source of distraction himself. Then reward him with a special treat or distract him with a replacement attraction. For example, throw a food dummy or your favorite apportel in the other direction.

You can learn how to do this in the Fressnapf guide “Retrieving”.

Practice the recall as often as possible. However, top different types of rat terrier if your dog has fallen into an attraction, then no recall command will help with untrained dogs. Now the tow line comes into play: direct him back to you with the leash and at the same time lure him with a reward. An intermediate step in tow line training is to have the tow line dragged across the floor without holding it. So you can pull an “emergency brake” at any time by stepping on the leash. Also, a hunting dog can quickly get caught with the tow line in the scrub and thus let go of the prey.

Read on specifically to the training for dogs with hunting instincts in the feeding bowl guide “Antijagdtraining”.

A walk in the forest on the tow line is a good alternative to give a hunting, untrained dog sufficient freedom of movement and still keep it under control. However, the goal of the towline training is to condition the dog on call without leash control.
