Their new study aims to develop a technology which can detect and locate the cancer in the body of the patient without them having to undergo the surgery.

General Process of Diagnosis- Now to determine if and where the disease has been spread in the body, doctors often carry out a biopsy of a patient which involves the method of surgically removing the small amount of tissue from an area where the tumour might be present. Even sometimes, this procedure is done twice or repeated in case the sample was taken from the wrong part of the body or because the sample of biopsy is too small to study and analyse. 

Aim of Researchers at university of portsmouth– The aim of researchers is to make this whole process of diagnosis completely non-surgical and they are working hard to make this more efficient by using biomedical technologies. They are trying to develop tiny molecular trackers which can be injected in the body of the patient to locate and track different kinds of diseases or cancers and an instrument which can be used to detect the signals of these trackers from outside of the body.

The lead of this project, ‘Dr Priyanka Dey’, from the University of Portmouth’s School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, has been named in one of the five winners of the CAMS Fellowships awards in the UK in 2022.

This fellowship actually offers grants that are worth up to 30,000 Pounds to deliver research and innovation by developing and creating new and novel technologies which supports the current and the future industrial needs in both bioanalytical and analytical sciences. 

Dr. Priyanka Dey of university of portsmouth School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences said that “ My Overall aim with this project is to create a technology which will be able to detect cancer at a very early stage”.

Further she said, “When I pursued research, I wanted my work to be useful for society. We have seen quite a few deaths in our family as a result of cancer, which was actually the true motivation behind thinking about this research. It is very satisfying and also exciting to work on something which could help speed up the treatment and diagnosis of cancer. This would just imply that less harsh treatments would be a lot more effective and so eventually we could wish that cancer could be fought and kicked off from the list of top 10 causes of death in the world”.

Her overall aim with this research is to create a technology which will be able to detect cancer at a very early stage and when she says early, it means that even before the symptoms have not yet developed but the doctor wants to test the person who might be at serious risk at a later point of time.

How will Dr. Dey’s CAMS award contribute to the Research?

The winnings from the CAMS award will be spent on the first half of the study which aims to create a faster way of analysing the presence of tiny trackers of cancers in the diseased organs. These cancer trackers are actually made up of tiny but important and intelligent beads of gold and molecules that are injected into the body of a patient to identify and reach the cancer cells which in turn can help the researchers to pinpoint and locate the cancer in the body.

How is the team at university of portsmouth going to work on this research?

So to carry out the first half of the study, details of which are mentioned above, the team of researchers will be designing a specialised Raman instrument which will identify the signal using these intelligent trackers from the artificial organs. Raman spectroscopy is generally used in chemistry and for identifying molecules based on their chemical make-up.

“If we get successful in this study and research of ours, we will be able to better understand how the trackers reach different organs that are diseased”, said Dr. Dey.

“We can also go some steps ahead in the future and try to detect these trackers from outside the body. This simply means that we won’t need any operative procedure for the diagnosis of cancer.”
