He becomes United’s second major signing of the summer after the £31m arrival of defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

Lukaku told the club website: “This is the perfect environment for me to continue my development as a footballer.”

Lukaku, who has also played for Chelsea and West Brom, will wear the number nine shirt at Old Trafford.

He is United’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of defender Victor Lindelof, midfielder Nemanja Matic and striker Alexis Sanchez.
