What causes my gums to be discolored?

Changes in color are typically due to pigment changes cause by an infectious process such as fluorosis, bleeding, swelling up of the gingiva, or formation of ulcers or vesicles. Fluorosis is usually cause by the consumption of excess fluoride found in toothpaste and tap water. And unless the fluorosis is reversible. There are few treatment options other than stop using those products containing fluoride and cover it with makeup when appropriate.

Does my treatment cost more than other procedures?

Is there anything I should avoid after my treatment?

You may have a dull, gritty feeling in your mouth after treatment and experience temporary dryness, mild sensitivity to hot or cold, or a change in taste of foods. These side effects will last for two to three weeks, but could continue for up to six months after the procedure is complete depending on what tooth surface has been lighten with the treatment. If any burning sensation persists beyond 48 hours please contact our office as soon as possible for an evaluation. One thing that we urge our patients not to do is smoke immediately following the Gingival Depigmentation procedure. Because tobacco use and smoking products are known to cause discoloration around teeth.

How soon will I see results?

Depigmentation is a long-term process, which typically takes about four to six months for noticeable results. As with any medical procedure, the degree of success varies depending on the individual. We recommend staying in contact with our office and periodically coming in for checkups to monitor progress.

Who is a good candidate for this procedure?

Anyone who is unhappy with the appearance of their gum tissues may be a good candidate for this procedure. This includes patients with hyperpigmentation (dark spots on the gum), teeth whitening, teeth restoration procedures, orthodontic care, pregnancy changes in gum coloration and even smokers whose chewing tobacco use leaves them with brown-yellow stains on their tongue and lips. Can I apply makeup or bleach my teeth after my treatment?

Gingival depigmentation treatments should be done with procedures like dental cleaning, restorative treatments. You may want to get a routine cleaning after about six months. Post-treatment to remove plaque and tartar that could build up over time and affect tooth coloration again. If you need dental treatment within six months of completing a GDCMT procedure, Dr. Snyder will apply a protective coating over your gums to protect them. Wile they are sensitive and cannot be expose to bleaching or brushing right away.

Why do some people have black gums?

If your gums are black, it meansdifferent things: genetics, smoking or tobacco use, poor oral hygiene  medications. Black gums might be an indicator of gum disease. Or possibly allergic reactions to food coloring in toothpaste and other dental products.
